Earthfall

Girl Standing By The Lake

After the huge success of ‘i and i’ and The Intimate Jig, Earthfall were commissioned by the Cardiff International Festival to create a work under the banner of a Celebration of Women in the Arts. This work was performed to sell-out audiences, in the round, on 4.5 tonnes of coal at The Coal Exchange in Cardiff Bay.

Girl Standing by the Lake was based on the paintings Welsh artist Gwen John, Kobo Abe’s classic novel, The Woman in the Dunes and the hostage Brian Keenan’s An Evil Cradling.  The choreography was risk-taking and confrontational as the performers dealt with captivity, escape, fear and desire, while immersed in provocative and poetic images, live music and the noise of bodies and feet on coal.
